"1981" is a track from American punk rock band Green Day's 2024 fourteenth studio album, Saviors. Like much of the band's output, it was written by lead singer and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong. The production was handled by studio veteran Rob Cavallo, who had previously worked closely with Green Day on platinum-selling albums like Dookie, Insomniac, Nimrod, American Idiot, and Bullet in a Bible. Thematically, "1981" pays homage to the punk rock scene of the early 1980s through a vibrant blend of power pop and punk-pop. Its lyrics capture the rebellious spirit and energy of that era, as well as the sense of nostalgia for a time when music and counterculture were at their peak. Despite not charting in the US, "1981" enjoyed moderate success in New Zealand, peaking at number 39. Saviors, its parent album, reached number 4 on the Billboard 200 and hit the top of the Official UK Albums Chart.
