The Grateful Dead had a penchant for flowers and sugar; 1972's "Sugaree", anyone? And in driving rock jam Sugar Magnolia – one of the band's best-known songs, along with "Truckin,'" "Casey Jones," "Uncle John's Band," and "Touch of Grey" – they adorn their country-rock reflection with yet more of the fragrant variety. Written by Robert Hunter and Bob Weir, "Sugar Magnolia" envisions a loyal lover who's a pillar of support to the song's touring rockstar and the salve he needs when things get rough ("She's got everything delightful / She's got everything I need / A breeze in the pines and the sun and bright moonlight / Crazy in the sunlight, yes, indeed"). Released on the Grateful Dead's 1970 album American Beauty, "Sugar Magnolia" was first aired live in June 1970 at the Fillmore West in San Francisco. The song has also been referenced in pop culture over the years, notably by the hippies in Donna Tartt's 1992 novel, The Secret History.
