In 1969, Michigan hard rock troupe Grand Funk Railroad breathed new life into the Animals' 1966 psyched-up single "Inside-Looking Out" – which made it to Number 12 on the UK Singles Chart, as well as into the Top 40 in Canada and the US – and embellished the track with references to marijuana (swapping the original lyrics from "rebirth" to "reefer" and "canvas bags" to "nickel bags"). The bluesy chugger, which loosely originated from a Mississisipi prison song collected by musicologist Alan Lomax and released in his album Popular Songbook, was featured on the band's 1969 Grand Funk album and became a staple of their live performances. Grand Funk Railroad – whose name tips its hat to the Grand Trunk and Western Railroad, a railroad line that ran through the band's hometown of Flint, Michigan – tore up the 1970s with their speaking-busting presence, and this track remained a constant for the no-holds-barred group.
