"Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" is a song by American punk rock band Green Day, released as the second single from their 1997 fifth studio album, Nimrod. The track was originally written by Billie Joe Armstrong in 1993 after his girlfriend moved to Ecuador. Even though the song was slated to be recorded during the Dookie (1994) sessions, the band and producer Rob Cavallo opted not to include it in the final tracklist. Three years later, Green Day decided to re-record it for their upcoming album, this time favoring acoustic instruments and sweeping string arrangements. Upon its official release on December 2, 1997, "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" was hailed as a clear departure from the band's traditional punk sound, showcasing the group's versatility. Its touching lyrics, which capture the essence of change and life's unpredictable nature, resonated with audiences across all genres and the song eventually became a hit at prom dances in the US. It peaked at Number 2 on Billboard's Alternative Airplay chart and was certified quintuple Platinum by the RIAA. In a surprising twist, singer-songwriter Glen Campbell covered "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" on his 2008 album Meet Glen Campbell, offering a unique, country-flavored interpretation that underscored the song's universal appeal.
