Confusingly, Swedish occult rockers Ghost reel you in with a sense of piano-powered joviality and theatricality that's made for the movies. Co-written by A Ghoul Writer, Klas Frans Åhlund, Vincent Pontare, Salem Lars Al Fakir, "Spillways" is the third track on their 2022 album Impera – which draws ghoulish inspiration from the Black Plague era of 14th century Europe – and revolves around a dark core, evoking the idea of a spillway (a type of dam) and the need for humans to control the darkness inside them ("It's the cruel beast that you feed / It's your burning yearning need to bleed / Through the spillways / (Spillways)". You won't be surprised to learn that Impera track "Hunter's Moon" – the band's first song in two years – was released on 30 September 2021 in support of the 2021 slasher flick Halloween Kills – which was directed by David Gordon Green – and is featured on the film's soundtrack.
