Throughout most of his extensive and prolific career, American composer and perennial misfit Frank Zappa operated on the fringes of popular music, often using elements from different genres to criticize their lack of substance. Such is the case of "Dirty Love," a classic rock tune that made extensive use of bawdy humor to mock the clichés of the love song, a genre Frank Zappa had always been reluctant to explore. "Dirty Love" was included as the third track on Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention's 1973 studio full-length Over-Nite Sensation, considered by many as one of Frank Zappa's most accessible albums. Despite the artist's conscious attempts to avoid commercial success, Over-Nite Sensation climbed to Number 32 on the Billboard 200 and was the first one of his albums to ever go Gold. Although uncredited, Tina Turner and The Ikettes provided backing vocals for the entire LP, most notably on the album closer "Montana."
