Written as a response to the controversy surrounding his 1979 song "Jewish Princess," for which he drew the ire of the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith (ADL) (now named Anti-Defamation League), on "Catholic Girls," Frank Zappa turned his attention to Christianity. Poking fun at the stereotype of the hedonistic Catholic girl who uses her religion as a cover-up, the off-kilter art-rock-meets-show tune employs sped-up silly voices is centred around Father Riley's Catholic youth organization (CYO). It became one of Frank Zappa's most recognisable tracks, featured on his Joe's Garage album, released 1979, which took the form of a rock opera and is known for its use of studio-based recording technique xenochrony (coined by Frank Zappa). "Catholic Girls" is xenochronous in its guitar solos, which essentially means they are unrelated guitar parts put together to create a unique rhythm.
