Composed by Ray Henderson in 1926 with lyrics by Buddy DeSylva and Lew Brown, blues origin story "Birth of the Blues" first came to light on Broadway that year and was sung by Harry Richman as part of George White's Scandals revue. Looking to Billie Holiday as an influence, Frank Sinatra recorded his version of "Birth of the Blues," which swings towards big band land rather than the blues territory of its title, but takes a whistlestop tour through the timeless African-American musical tradition known as the blues, which by the 1920s had begun to reach a commercial audience. "Oh, they say some people long ago / Were searching for a different tune / One that they could croon / As only they can," begins Birth of the Blues,” reminding of its roots; "And then they nursed it, they rehearsed it / And then sent out that news / That the southland gave birth to the blues / They nursed it, then they rehearsed it / And then sent out that news / The southland, they gave birth to the blues.”

Love this. It's perfectly true to the Sinatra version, which is the greatest out there. (Sure, Sammy Davis Jr. does a real good job on this song, too, but Sinatra is king, and Frank's rendition is the best.)
