First released on his 1971 album Love Letters from Elvis—a scrapbook of recordings left over from his intense round of recording sessions that took place in Nashville in June 1970—"If I Were You" finds Elvis Presley singing about what he knows best—love. But he does so in a particularly novel way. "The sandman comes to my house late each night / But it's way in the morning before he turns out my life / It's times like this my darling I can see / If I were you I'd know that I love me," he croons on this highlight of Love Letters from Elvis, which was a commercial flop in spite of its high-calibre cache of songs. The album spawned three singles including "Life" / "Only Believe," which reached number 53 on the US Billboard Singles chart in March 1971 and marked Elvis Presley's lowest chart position for a single since "Almost in Love," which had just skimmed the top 100 in late 1968.
