The advent of rock and roll in the 1950s was a surprisingly fertile period for holiday music, with iconic songs such as “Rocking Around the Christmas Tree” and “Jingle Bell Rock” popping up to bring Christmas cheer to this fresh new music genre. Elvis Presley was among the many rock and roll singers to lend their voices to the holiday celebrations, and, in fact, he recorded several albums of Christmas music. In 2017, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra used archival voice recordings of Elvis’s Christmas songs and accompanied them with new orchestral arrangements, resulting in the album Christmas with Elvis and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (2017). “Blue Christmas,” one of the most famous songs recorded by Elvis, was included as part of the package. “Blue Christmas” was first written by Billy Hayes and Jay Johnson. The version on the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra album was produced by Nick Patrick and Don Reedman. It was the fourth single released from the collection, which peaked at Number 73 on the US Billboard 200 chart.
