Written by Billy Hayes and Jay W. Johnson in the late 1940s, "Blue Christmas" was made famous by Elvis Presley in 1957. Unlike many of the entries in the holiday songbook, "Blue Christmas" is a somber tale of heartbreak and longing, a story of loss and regret. Even though it was first recorded in 1948 by Doye O'Dell, it was the King of Rock'n'Roll who further boosted the song's popularity by including it in his third Christmas LP, Elvis' Christmas album. Elvis Presley's version quickly shot to the top of the holiday charts and featured notable contributions by vocal group The Jordanaires, whose septimal minor third harmonies (often referred to as "blue notes") greatly added to the song's underlying gloom. In the following years, "Blue Christmas" received the cover treatment by The Beach Boys, The Browns, Shakin' Stevens, and Martina McBride, among others. In 2012, country-pop trio Lady A (formerly known as Lady Antebellum) offered a brass-heavy, bluesy take on the track, included in their first Christmas full-length On This Winter's Night.
