The holiday standard "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?" was written by American composer Frank Loesser in 1947. And, even though it is usually performed during the holidays, that was not the songwriter's intent; according to Loesser's daughter Susan, the question in the song's title is supposed to reflect on the narrator's anxiety regarding the possibility of a romantic relationship in the future. It was first recorded later that year by Margaret Whiting and had its first chart entrance in 1949 when The Orioles' version peaked at Number 9 on Billboard's Best-Selling Retail Rhythm and Blues chart. In the following years, "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?" was covered by a whole host of artists, including Ella Fitzgerald, who included the song in her first Christmas album, 1960's Ella Wishes You a Swinging Christmas. Although Ella Fitzgerald's take on the holiday classic remains one of the most famous cover versions, the song has also been recorded by Diana Krall, Seth MacFarlane, and Norah Jones in more recent years.
