"In the cool of the evening / When everything is gettin' kind of groovy / You call me up and ask me / Would I like to go with you and see a movie," asks Dusty Springfield on this Halloween staple. "Spooky" was first performed as an instrumental in 1968 by James Cobb and producer Buddy Buie for the group Classics IV (with vocals from Dennis Yost) before Dusty Springfield breathed witchy psych-pop life into the track in 1970, which later became an indelible part of modern pop culture when it was used in Guy Richie’s classic crime comedy film, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, in 1998. "Spooky" was also famously covered by Southern rockers Atlanta Rhythm Section, who went to Number 17 with their version of the song, which was featured on their eighth album, Underdog, released in June 1979. Other notable artists who have raised "Spooky" from the dead are Lydia Lunch, Joan Osborne, and David Cassidy.
