Southern rockers Atlanta Rhythm Section formed in 1971 and released their debut self-titled album via Decca Records in January 1972. By their third album, Third Annual Pipe Dream, (1974) they had scored their first Top 40 hit with "Doraville," which reached Number 35 in the US. For their rendition of this Halloween standard, the band climbed even higher on the chart, going all the way to Number 17 with "Spooky," which was featured on their eighth album, Underdog, released in June 1979 and also spawned a Number 19 hit in "Do It or Die." Adding a bluesy-rock stomp to what was originally an instrumental song performed and written by saxophonist Mike Sharpe (Shapiro) along with Harry Middlebrooks Jr, "Spooky" was first brought to life in 1968 by James Cobb and producer Buddy Buie for the group Classics IV (with vocals from Dennis Yost) while Dusty Springfield's version, released in 1970, was later immortalized in Guy Richie’s Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels film.
