When thinking of era-defining pop hits, Dusty Springfield’s “I Only Want to Be With You” is one of the first ones that come to mind. With its energetic backing track and impassioned performance by a young Dusty Springfield, the tune—written by British songwriters Mike Hawker and Ivor Raymonde—took the world by storm upon its release in 1963. The song was first intended for Jean Ryder (wife of Mike Hawker at the time) to perform, but it was given to Dusty Springfield as a debut single to kickstart her solo career.
