For Donny Hathaway's self-titled second album, he chose to cover pop, soul, and gospel songs, including "A Song for You" by Leon Russell. The beautiful ballad was written by Russell for his girlfriend, singer Rita Coolidge. The lyrics start with describing his life as a touring musician, playing on big stages for thousands of people, and then focus on the love he has for only one person. "I love you in a place / Where there's no space or time / I love you for my life / You're a friend of mine." Although their romance didn’t last, Coolidge calls the song "The most beautiful song ever written".
