Releasing the perfect summer jam is one of music's highest honors. In 1984, Don Henley – knee-deep in his newfound solo career that came after his tenure with the Eagles, who had broken up in 1980 – revved up his soft-rock engine to burn rubber with "The Boys of Summer," and won himself a Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance two years later. The "Boys of Summer" isn't quite the bright burst of carefree feeling that comes with the start of the season but, rather, it's a song about getting old and the pain of lost love ("I never will forget those nights / I wonder if it was a dream / Remember how you made me crazy? / Remember how I made you scream?") Bestowing Don Henley with a signature hit, a multiple award-winning video, and a Number 5 US Billboard Hot 100 single, "The Boys of Summer" was later given a trance makeover by Spanish artist DJ Sammy in 2002 and a pop-punk refit by The Ataris in 2003.
