In 1984, founding Styx member Dennis DeYoung was at a crossroads. His group, which had been pushing progressive rock forward since 1972, had recently disbanded. But one of the songs he had written with the intention of playing it with his band, “Desert Moon,” was too good to simply give away to another artist. So Dennis DeYoung decided to record the song as his debut solo single. He also produced the song himself. A more pop-oriented soft-rock song, “Desert Moon” still retains the musical virtuosity that characterized his time in Styx, particularly with its guitar solo. Lyrically, “Desert Moon” is a song about nostalgia and reminiscing on youth. “Desert Moon” was a surprise hit for Dennis DeYoung, peaking at Number 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, as well as Number 7 on the Canadian RPM Top Singles Chart. It would also then go on to become the title track for the ensuing album, 1984’s Desert Moon, which would also go on to be successful, reaching Number 24 on the Billboard 200.
