"Diamond Eyes" is the swirling, riff-laden opener and title track from Deftones' sixth studio album of 2010 that makes several allusions to death, in spite of the LP's generally positive disposition. Like the rest of the album, "Diamond Eyes" was recorded with producer Nick Raskulinecz (Alice In Chains, Foo Fighters, Velvet Revolver, Stone Sour) and showed a marked departure from the abrasive screaming of the group's previous efforts towards the textures and atmospheres of shoegaze. The album was a chart victory, cracking the top ten to give the band their highest position on the Billboard 200 since their 2003's self-titled fourth album. Diamond Eyes was the first Deftones album to feature bassist Sergio Vega (of post-hardcore band Quicksand), replacing original bassist Chi Cheng who was involved in a car crash that left him in a coma in November of 2008. He eventually passed away after being taken off life support in April 2013.
