The song was first written by Marvin Gaye, William "Mickey" Stevenson, and Ivy Jo Hunter, and released in 1964 by Martha and the Vandellas, becoming a Motown classic and adopted as a civil rights anthem. In 1985, legendary British singers David Bowie and Mick Jagger recorded their own duet version of the song, which went on to become a massive success in its own right. The duo recorded the song as a charity single to raise money for the Live Aid famine relief cause, with the original plan being to perform it live from two different stadiums via satellite linkup (this proved impossible at the time due to technical limitations).
