"Cracked Actor," a song by David Bowie from his 1973 sixth studio album Aladdin Sane, is a candid exploration of the dark side of fame and Hollywood debauchery. Written during David Bowie's stay in Los Angeles in October 1972 amidst the Ziggy Stardust Tour, "Cracked Actor" delves into the life of an aging film star. Musically, it is characterized by its hard rock and glam rock influences, with prominent guitar work by Mick Ronson. It was produced by David Bowie and Ken Scott, and featured the Spiders from Mars band, which included Ronson, Trevor Bolder, and Woody Woodmansey. Inspired by the sleazy characters that frequented Los Angeles' Sunset Boulevard in the 1970s, its decadent lyrics describe a drug-addled encounter between a former Hollywood glory and a sex worker. Notably, "Cracked Actor" was David Bowie's first single released in Russia and Eastern Europe. The song also provided the name for a 1975 film documenting David Bowie's life in Los Angeles.
