Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young set sail on starry, rootsy folk waters for this exploration of open sailing in the South Pacific. Taking its namesake from the Crux constellation in the southern hemisphere, which is used as a navigation tool for sailors, the song tells the tale of a man on a journey across the Pacific following a failed relationship. "Southern Cross" was written by Stephen Stills—who provided a new set of lyrics—and based on the song "Seven League Boots" by Rick Curtis, and Michael Curtis. The song was included on the 1982 album Daylight by Crosby, Stills & Nash (who were battling with David Crosby's drug issues at the time) and went to number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100 in late 1982 where it stayed for three weeks. It was the group's final hit on the Billboard top 40—on 18 January 2023, David Crosby died, shutting down any possibility of a reunion with the four band members.
