In 1993, Bay Area rockers Counting Crows made a huge splash in the music world with their debut single, the massive radio hit "Mr. Jones." The song took the charts by storm, peaking at Number 5 on the US Billboard Hot 100, Number 7 in France, and reaching Number 1 in Canada, propelling its parent album August and Everything After to the Top 5 of the Billboard 200. Apart from their breakthrough single, the LP also featured the fan-favorite "Sullivan Street," a plaintive ballad about the inevitable end of a romantic relationship. Written by lead singer Adam Duritz and guitarist David Bryson, "Sullivan Street" was inspired by one of Duritz's ex-girlfriends, who was living with her very Catholic mother at the time. Unable to spend the night with her, Duritz made several late-night drives during which the singer realized he had to put an end to the relationship. Even though it wasn't released as a single, "Sullivan Street" became a staple of the band's repertoire, and live versions can be found on the 2007 deluxe edition bonus disc of August and Everything After and the 2011 live LP August & Everything After - Live at Town Hall.
