Just one year after Counting Crows ran rings around the college rock planet with their signature tune and first commercial single, "Mr. Jones," they upped their game even further with this Philip Glass-inspired Modern Rock chart-topper. Written by Adam Duritz and Counting Crows's guitarist, Dave Bryson and produced by T Bone Burnett, "Einstein on the Beach (For an Eggman)" alludes to or references both Humpty Dumpty (the "eggman"), Albert Einstein, and the atomic bomb while the title itself draws inspiration from the Philip Glass opera, which premiered in 1976. However, the jangle-infused alt-rock of the song's DNA is undeniably Counting Crows. Appearing on the band's 1994 LP DGC Rarities Vol. 1, "Einstein on the Beach (For an Eggman)" gave Counting Crows their first number-one song on the Modern Rock chart, eclipsing the career-defining success of "Mr. Jones," which only made it to number two.
