In 2006, Coldplay headed into the studio with legendary producer Brian Eno to start working on the successor to their massively popular, chart-topping album X&Y (2005). After taking a break to complete the Latin American leg of their Twisted Logic Tour in 2007, the band resumed their recording efforts and released the grandiloquent Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends in June 2008. A much more complex affair, both musically and lyrically, their fourth full-length found the group steering away from the indie rock sound of their early beginnings and experimenting with styles like Afropop, tribal music, and art-rock. Released a day after the album, second single "Viva la Vida" ("Long Live Life") takes its title from Frida Kahlo's last painting before her death and contains several historical and biblical references, in what many interpreted as a retelling of the French Revolution. Shortly after its release, the ambitious orchestral track became Coldplay's first single to top the charts on both sides of the Atlantic.
