Clarence Carter brought soul-laden sophistication to the seedy act of infidelity on this 1968 classic. "What would I give for just a few moments / What would I give just to have you near / Tell me you will try to slip away somehow / Oh, I need you darling, I want to see you right now," he shamelessly sings in the first verse, hoping to coax the object of his affection into an illicit liaison. In spite of its insalubrious subject-matter, "Slip Away" – which was co-written by Clarence Carter's friends, William Armstrong, Marcus Daniel, and Wilbur Terrell, and featured on the former's 1968 album This Is Clarence Carter – went all the way to Number 2 on the R&B charts and Number 6 on the pop charts. It provided a springboard for Clarence Carter’s future success as a touring artist, and ultimately greased the wheels for his subsequent funk-laced hit, released later that year; the seasonal pop pick "Back Door Santa.”
