The jubilant piano hook of "You Never Can Tell"—which nods to Mitchell Torok's 1953 hit "Caribbean"—belies the song's shady origins, composed when rock 'n' roll originator Chuck Berry was serving prison time for "transporting an underage female across state lines for immoral purposes," violating the Mann Act. Also known as “C’est La Vie” or “Teenage Wedding,” the saxophone-streaked song tells the tale of a seemingly content married teenage couple. Each verse ends with the line: "'C'est la vie,' say the old folks, 'it goes to show you never can tell.'" Released in 1964, "You Never Can Tell" went to number 14 at the time, (giving Chuck Berry his final Top 40 hit until chart-topper "My Ding-a-Ling" in 1972). Thirty years later, the song reached the ears of a new generation when it was featured on the iconic soundtrack to Quentin Tarantino's 1994 blockbuster Pulp Fiction. It appeared in the memorable twist dance scene at Jack Rabbit Slim's.
