Even though "Call Me" was originally written for English singer Petula Clark, it was Chicano rocker-turned-romantic crooner Chris Montez who transformed it into an easy listening classic in the late 1960s. Composed by British singer-songwriter Tony Hatch, "Call Me" was first introduced to the world in the Petula Clark album I Know a Place, released in 1965. That year, the then-retired singer Chris Montez, who had previously scored a Top 10 hit with "Let's Dance" in 1962, was convinced by A&M Records' head honcho Herb Albert to continue his recording career in the easy listening genre. Chosen as Chris Montez's A&M debut, "Call Me" soon became one of the singer's biggest hits by peaking at Number 2 on the Easy Listening chart and Number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100. Chris Montez helped revive the interest in the track, which was covered by a whole host of artists in the following years, including Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughan, and The Supremes & The Four Tops.
