Written by Brian Wilson and Mike Love and produced by Brian Wilson, “I Get Around” was issued on May 11, 1964 as the lead single from The Beach Boys’ album All Summer Long, which arrived in July 1964. The Beach Boys laid down instrumental tracks at Western Studios in early April and added vocals on April 10. “I Get Around” features a bold structure: it opens with a cappella harmony, moves through tightly arranged verses driven by guitar and organ riffs, modulates key during the solo, and showcases Brian Wilson’s falsetto alongside Mike Love’s tenor leads. Lyrically, “I Get Around” narrates youthful energy, cruising lifestyles, and newfound celebrity – lyrics revised by Love prior to release. It became The Beach Boys’ first Number 1 hit in the US, held the top spot for two weeks, also hit Number 1 in Canada, and climbed to number 7 in the UK. The Beach Boys used “I Get Around” to cement their early identity, blending Southern California surf style with pop sophistication and marking their breakthrough beyond regional act.
