Long before "The Lady in Red" made Chris De Burgh a mainstream popstar, he was busy making cerebral art-rock wrapped in vivid storytelling. Case in point: "Spanish Train." Launched at the very start of the British-Irish hit-maker's career in the mid-1970s, the song tells the macabre tale of a train in Spain that allegedly carries the souls of the dead. On said train, God and the Devil play a game of poker to decide the fate of the souls. "Spanish Train" appeared on Chris De Burgh's second album Spanish Train and Other Stories (1975), which marked him out as a cult singer-songwriter with a gothic streak. Other low-key favourites from the album included "Patricia The Stripper" and "A Spaceman Came Travelling." Spanish Train and Other Stories was the follow-up to Chris De Burgh's debut 1974 full-length, Far Beyond These Castle Walls, which established him as a purveyor of fine, noirish ballads.
