Back in 2002, the musical black comedy Chicago became one of the most unlikely hits of the year, eventually scoring the Academy Award for Best Picture. The film is an adaptation of the 1975 stage musical of the same name, which featured music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb. The 2002 film version was widely praised for its new take on the original songs, including Queen Latifah’s performance of the tune “When You’re Good to Mama.” Queen Latifah plays the character of Mama, the matron of the Cook County Jail where Renée Zellwegger’s Roxie Hart is imprisoned for her husband’s murder. Roxie fantasizes musical numbers based on her interactions in the jail, which include “When You’re Good to Mama,” a song that outlines the character of Mama and the role she plays within the story. The song was included in the accompanying soundtrack album Chicago: Music from the Miramax Motion Picture, which hit Number 2 on the US Billboard 200 chart. The album also went on to win the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album for a Motion Picture.
