The charm of Charley Pride is how he channeled plainspoken emotiveness, catchy melodies, and universal human experiences into sparkling country-pop rhinestones that helped him to join the ranks of Nashville's top artists – and carve a space for himself as the genre's most successful African-American voice. His first single, Snakes Crawl at Night" was released in January 1966, but his record label kept his race hidden until this single – his third to date and first notable hit – propelled him into the country top ten. Written by Jack Clement, heartbreaker "Just Between You and Me" sees Charley Pride go straight for the jugular ("So I feel so blue sometimes I wanna die / And so I've got a broken heart so what") and was released as the first single from the Mississippi-born crooner's breakthrough Pride of Country Music, (1967) album, rising to number nine and earning him a Grammy nomination for Best Male Country Vocal Performance.
