American singer-songwriter Joshua Karpeh, better known to the world as Cautious Clay, has built a formidable career for himself in a relatively short period of time. Getting his start by remixing beats for his friends and developing his own hip-hop beats with DIY production, he slowly amassed a following and received more and more attention with each release. His song “Wildfire” was released in anticipation of his debut full-length album Deadpan Love (2021). It’s an acoustic-based pop ballad with a strong soul influence, as well as the use of background vocals in a similar manner to gospel music. “Wildfire” builds over the course of its two and a half minutes to create a powerful statement about the dichotomy between thoughts and actions, and how a small gesture can kick off a strong emotional turmoil for somebody else. “Wildfire” was later covered by Rosé, from the girl group BLACKPINK, on her video-streaming channel.
