Initially known as the New York City Players, American band Cameo gained commercial acclaim in the early and mid-1980s through a series of releases that effortlessly combined funk, rock, hip-hop, and pop music. Coming on the heels of their second US Number 1 album She's Strange (1984), their eleventh studio LP Single Life (1985) continued their amazing run of hits with songs like the Top 5 R&B singles "Attack Me With Your Love" and "Single Life." Released on June 7, 1985, the latter reached Number 2 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. It also enjoyed great popularity in the UK, where it peaked at Number 15. Its parent album, in turn, went to Number 2 on the US R&B charts and Number 58 on the Billboard 200. Written by Larry Blackmon and Michael Thomas "Tomi" Jenkins, the infectious "Single Life" features the groovy synth-funk stylings that would go on to define the band's output during the 1980s, as well as lyrics about a carefree man looking for a one-night stand. In the years that followed, "Single Life" was sampled by urban artists such as Monie Love and Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five.
