On this proto-hipster-satirising piece of funky alt-rock, Cake are ruthless in their takedown of overprivileged and over-the-top posers who take everything to excess. "Well, your CD collection looks shiny and costly / How much did you pay for your Bad Moto Guzzi? / And how much did you spend on your black leather jacket / Is it you or your parents in this income tax bracket?", asks the band's frontman John McCrea in the opening verse of "Rock 'n' Roll Lifestyle", his quirky sing-speak delivery filled with mockery. Released in 1993 – nearly two decades before the word "hipster" would become embedded in the collective cultural consciousness – this prescient tune was among the highlights of Cake's debut studio Motorcade of Generosity, which saw the Sacramento oddballs make their presence known via a sonic soup of weird and wonderful flavours that drew from a wellspring of wide-ranging influences, including country and mariachi music.
