Bloodstone slowed down the tempo and leaned into a smooth soul sound for "We Go a Long Way Back", an uplifting 1982 expedition from the Kansas City locals who got their start as doo-wop group The Sinceres and whose repertoire has spanned soul, funk, R&B, rock, gospel, Latin music, and more. After setting the '70s on fire as part of the era's Black rock explosion – powered by the Jimi Hendrix-channelling guitar-playing of Charles Love – Bloodstone retreated into the shadows. However, they re-emerged in the early '80s to reclaim their seat on the R&B chart throne with a sublime album produced and arranged by The Isley Brothers, and released on their Brothers' T-Neck label. Title track We Go a Long Way Back propelled the group back into the R&B top ten while “Go On and Cry” cracked the top 20. The album was later reissued by Purpose Music Vaults in 2013, with added bonus tracks including the extended 12-inch mix of “We Go a Long Way Back".
