American musician Beck has made a career out of experimentation and genre exploration. Back in 1999, after releasing widely acclaimed albums such as Odelay (1996) and Mutations (1998), Beck turned towards soul music for inspiration. The result was the 1999 album Midnite Vultures, which combined R&B, funk, and Motown influences to create a psychedelic collage of an album. And though Debra would go on to be hailed as one of the highlights from Midnite Vultures, it was actually first attempted for the album Odelay. It was initially considered too tongue-in-cheek but was eventually recorded as Midnite Vultures’ closing track. Debra was written by Beck along with Ed Green, John King, and Michael Simpson. It was produced by Beck and production team The Dust Brothers. The song contains samples of the songs My Love for You by Ramsey Lewis and Win by David Bowie. Beck’s Debra appeared in the 2017 film Baby Driver.
