Astrud Gilberto's dusty voice proved the perfect pitcher for carrying "The Girl from Ipanema" to international acclaim and rooting the Bahia-born artist as one of bossa nova's biggest stars. Written in 1962, with music by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Portuguese lyrics by Vinícius de Moraes, the song was first recorded by Perry Ribeiro that year, but found worldwide fame in 1964 when US saxophonist Stan Getz jazzed the song up and brought in Astrud Gilberto on vocals. The recording happened by chance when Astrud Gilberto's husband, the late bossa nova pioneer João Gilberto, was in the studio working with Stan Getz on the album Getz/Gilberto. Unable to sing in English, he asked for his wife's assistance and "The Girl from Ipanema" was born, with both the English and Portuguese version of the song featured on Getz/Gilberto (1964). The rest languishes in easy-listening history; "The Girl from Ipanema" is one of the most recorded pop songs of all-time, and was inducted into the Latin Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001.
