"Nutshell (unplugged)" is a plaintive yet word-sparse statement from one of the grunge era's greatest masters. Consisting only of two verses—and a torrent of "oohs" from the inimitable Layne Staley—this lighters-in-the-air ballad is regarded among the top tier of Alice in Chains tracks, with lyrics about loneliness and death that took on a new poignant meaning following the untimely passing of Layne Staley in 2002, notably in the haunting lines: "If I can't be my own / I'd feel better dead." "Nutshell" was originally featured on Alice in Chains' 1994 EP Jar of Flies, but it's the unplugged version, played on MTV Unplugged in 1996, that is held in particularly high esteem. With music written by the band's bassist Mike Inez, drummer Sean Kinney and guitarist/vocalist Jerry Cantrell, "Nutshell" has been dedicated by the latter to the late Alice in Chains members Layne Staley and Mike Starr.
