In 2021, country music superstar Alan Jackson released Where Have You Gone, his first album in six years. The 21 song collection is filled with what Jackson is known for, beautifully crafted neo-traditional country songs. Although the album's title track bemoans the scarcity of "soft steel guitar" and "lyrics from the heart" in today's country music, Jackson says he’s not really focused on what anyone else is doing, and that he’ll just continue to do the style of country music he loves. Jackson lost his mother in 2017, and a year later, lost his son-in-law in a boating accident. Where Have You Gone was recorded in Nashville during the pandemic with all the musicians masked. On "Things That Matter", Jackson sings "We only get so many trips around the sun / Some things matter, some things don’t / It's up to you to choose which one."
