Born and raised in Newnan, Georgia, Alan Jackson is known for blending honky-tonk and country-pop that saw him blaze a trail for neotraditional country. It’s the hybrid sound you can heard on albums like 1992's A Lot About Livin' (And a Little 'bout Love), his first Number one country LP. Ten albums deep, in the ‘00s he turned his attention to gospel and recorded Precious Memories, an album of traditional gospel songs he put together especially in honor of his mother on Mother's Day, and released on the Arista Nashville label in February 2006. He released the follow-up in 2013, Precious Memories: Volume II, on which this title track was included. "Precious Memories" has been a gospel standard for almost a century, originally written by John Braselton Fillmore Wright following the tragic death of his five-year-old son. Owing to the song’s somber content, Alan Jackson opted for a pared-back version of the poignant song.
