Like the rest of Adele's heart-wrenching and confessional fourth album 30, "Strangers by Nature" sees the British singer-songwriter opening up about her love life, peeling back the big soul statement-making of other album tracks to quietly reflect on her romantic state of mind. "I'll be taking flowers to the cemetery of my heart / For all of my lovers in the present and in the dark / Every anniversary, I'll pay respects and say I'm sorry / For they never stood a chance as if they could / When no one knows what it's like to be us," she sings on the pared-back track, backed by swirling, atmospheric synths and swells of filmic strings. Co-written Ludwig Göransson, an Oscar-winning Swedish composer who has worked on Black Panther and with Childish Gambino, "Strangers by Nature" is a homage to the late Wizard of Oz icon Judy Garland, with Adele reportedly compelled to create the song after watching the Renée Zellweger-starring Judy Garland biopic, Judy.
