Formed by country music star Nathan Carter and the band's now-manager Liam McKenna, Ceol's modus operandi is traditional Irish music with modern bounce. The quintet of musicians—composed of Dubliners Daragh O'Connor and Cathal Dervan, Donegal's Matthew Crampsey, Wexford's James O'Sullivan and Kildare's Daryl Phillips—were all working locally until they were spotted and Ceol was born. The group stepped out with debut EP Those Were The Days in late 2022, and a viral Nathan Carter-assisted hit called "Heave Away," and sealed their fate. Recorded in 2023, "Travelin' Soldier" is Ceol's take on a well-travelled country staple, originally recorded by US country music artist Bruce Robison in 1996 and covered by the likes of Sheryl Crow, Ty England, Cody Johnson and others. The sad song tells the sad story of a love affair and a US soldier who ultimately succumbs to his fate. "And one name read, and nobody really cared / But a pretty little girl with a bow in her hair," they sing.
