It took nearly 15 years for Texan country sensation and former competitive bull rider Cody Johnson to make himself known in the country mainstream – scoring his first Top 40 Country Airplay hit with "On My Way to You" in 2018 – but his fans will no doubt say it was worth the wait. Following the release of his major-label debut Ain't Nothin' to It (2019), he returned in 2021 with the 18-track Human: The Double Album, which included covers of Willie Nelson, Vince Gill, and Conway Twitty. In 2022, he decided to tackle a song originally recorded by Bruce Robison in 1996 and made popular by The Chicks (fka The Dixie Chicks) in 2002, merging steel guitar with acoustic and fiddle for a wistful acoustic depiction of a teenage girl waiting for a soldier to return from the Vietnam War. In this ultimately tragic tale, the solider is killed overseas and "Travelin' Soldier" is transformed into an anti-war song, promoted by The Chicks during the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
