Back in 1980, a revolutionary musical fantasy film under the name of Xanadu was released upon an unsuspecting (and some would say unprepared) American audience. And while the film – a maximalist, surreal, disco-infused fever dream – was initially considered a box office disappointment, it has since gone on to become a cult classic. This is largely due to the film’s music. One such song is Don’t Walk Away,” a track by the English rock band Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) which was then adapted into an animated sequence in the film. With its bright rotoscope animation and surreal imagery, the Don’t Walk Away sequence is considered one of the film’s highlights. Don’t Walk Away was written and produced by Jeff Lynne, and was first released as part of the group’s 1977 album Out of the Blue. Don’t Walk Away made it to Number 21 on the UK Singles Chart. The song was also re-recorded for the soundtrack to the stage musical version of the film in 2007.
