Willie Nelson teamed up with his good pal, the "Dang Me" hit-maker and honky-tonk hero Roger Miller, for this wistful paean to long-term friendship and country music. "Old Friend" was recorded for Willie Nelson's duet album of the same name in 1982, adding to a plethora of joint releases that included Funny How Time Slips Away with Faron Young, Six Hours At Pedernales with Curtis Potter and Pancho & Lefty with Merle Haggard. Featuring Ray Price on backing vocals, "Old Friend" showcases the timeworn quality of the pair's voices as they wax lyrical about "pitching pennies in the park," "playing croquet 'till it's dark" and "swapping lies of lives and loves" over a mellowed out country stroll. "Old Friend" was the opening track of an album which gathered numbers written by Roger Miller including "When a House Is Not a Home,"Invitation to the Blues" and "I'll Pick Up My Heart (And Go Home)."
