On Willie Nelson's booze-filled confessional "I Gotta Get Drunk," the protagonist rues his upcoming fate, knowing that he is soon bound to regret his drunken choices. "Well I got to get drunk and I sure do dread it / Because I know just what I'm going to do," he begins. The Texas-born country icon first wrote "I Gotta Get Drunk" in Houston, before upping sticks to Nashville in 1960, and years later explained that the song was an autobiographical reflection on his own drinking, which he claimed he had been taking to excess at the time. "I was a lousy drunk, a foolish drunk, a fighting drunk, a drunk who did himself much damage. But I was caught up in the culture of drinking. That's what country singers did, right? That's what pickers did. That was the life," he wrote in his 2015 autobiography. Beer-goggled doozy "I Gotta Get Drunk," which was included on Willie Nelson's tenth studio album, Both Sides Now (1970), certainly seems to compound this viewpoint.
