By the time "Uncle Tom's Cabin" came out, American hard rock band Warrant had already cemented themselves as a major force in the glam metal scene with their 1989 debut album Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich. After delivering two back-to-back Top 10 singles with "Cherry Pie" and "I See Red," Warrant continued their victory lap with "Uncle Tom's Cabin" in 1991, which preceded the release of their second album Cherry Pie by just a few months. Written by lead singer Jani Lane, the song's original working title was "I Know a Secret" and its lyrics tell a story about a witness to police involvement in a double murder. Originally, "Uncle Tom's Cabin" was supposed to be the album title and its first single but the band changed their mind after writing "Cherry Pie." It enjoyed moderate chart success, peaking at Number 78 on the Billboard Hot 100 and Number 19 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.
