"You Matter to Me" soundtracks a poignant scene in 2007 indie comedy-drama Waitress, when protagonist Jenna (played by Keri Russell) has left her toxic husband and looks to love interest Dr. Pomatter with a new sense of hope. Performed in the movie as a duet between Drew Gehling (Dr. Pomatter) and Jessie Mueller (Jenna), both the music and lyrics for the song were created by singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles for her fifth studio album, which also doubled up as the Broadway soundtrack; What's Inside: Songs from Waitress (2015). "Because you matter to me / Simple and plain and not much to ask from somebody / You matter to me / I promise you do, you / You matter too / I promise you do you'll see / You matter to me," sings Jason Mraz, stepping in to sing Dr. Pomatter's part on Sara Bareilles's version of the movie tune. The album What's Inside: Songs from Waitress shot to Number ten on the US Billboard 200 chart, and gave Sara Barellies her fifth US Top 10 album.
