"Sad Man's Tongue" is a song by Danish rock band Volbeat, included in their 2007 sophomore studio effort Rock the Rebel/Metal the Devil. Boasting a wide array of influences that ranged from straight-out heavy metal to rootsy rockabilly, the album was an unexpected hit for the band, topping the charts in their native Denmark and achieving Platinum sales shortly after its release. Its first single, the country-tinged "Sad Man's Tongue," was written by lead singer Michael Poulsen from the point of view of a free spirit who is sent to jail after refusing to go to war. The song, which kicks off with traditional country instrumentation, quickly builds into the band's trademark heavy metal sound towards the chorus. Entirely sung with an affected American accent, "Sad Man's Tongue" also serves as a tribute to Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues," featuring many obvious nods to the late American singer-songwriter.
